Some random thoughts on the first round of the NFL Draft

* One can see why a team would be high on Kyler Murray. And a quarterback would figure to be the biggest impact player a team could select.

Still, it seems Arizona has drafted the next Doug Flutie. One could do far worse, but this selection raises more questions than anything else.

Perhaps Arizona feels by having two first round quarterbacks taken in the last two drafts they can’t go wrong in finding a star. Supposedly new head coach Kliff Kingsbury is high on Murray.

This weekend, by drafting Murray first, Kingsbury is the most influential man in the NFL. Let that sink in.

Which means if Kingsbury is right, then Texas Tech looks like a bunch of buffoons. If he’s wrong, then the Cardinals put too much stock in going with the new fad in hiring football coaches.

Keep in mind, having two first round quarterbacks on the roster might not be such a bad idea. It certainly worked for the Pittsburgh Steelers a half-century ago when they drafted Terry Hanratty and Terry Bradshaw in successive years (while technically Hanratty was a second-round pick, his overall selection of 30th in the 1969 draft would be worthy of a first round pick today).

It just seems the safe way to build a 3–13 team would be to deal either the rights to the first overall pick or Josh Rosen for picks.
