Better Times Ahead For the Tennessee Volunteers May Become Law
Today U.S. Congressman Mark Walker (R-NC) will introduce a bill that will allow the college athlete not to be paid by the institution themselves, but rather profit off his or her likeness.
So if the NCAA wishes to remain tax-exempt, they can’t prohibit an athlete from making money off their names.
Let’s cut to the facts. If you’re a Tennessee fan, Walker is proposing a clear path for the resurrection of Volunteers athletics.
Let’s say you’re a blue chip athlete deciding on where to play college football and your choices come down to Miami and Tennessee.
Sure, Tennessee has the fan support, but Miami has the sun. It has as much tradition and, in fact, it’s more contemporary.
Miami is about hip-hop, and girls in bikinis. Tennessee is about a 50-year-old hillbilly tune and people thinking they look good in checkerboard overalls.
The Hurricanes coach, Manny Diaz, is younger and hipper than Jeremy Pruitt.
Check that, Diaz is actually one year older than Pruitt. Diaz just seems younger.
The metro area is bigger. Miami, even if they are not the program they once were, doesn’t view Clemson, let alone Florida, as insurmountable opponents.
What sounds better to you? And that’s Miami, who, as mentioned before, isn’t the program they once were.
