What’s with Tennessee fans referring to the Volunteers as “we?” Do they think they’re on the roster? Of course, with the depth charts the head coach puts out, fans may be confused enough to think they are.
Tennessee Volunteers backup quarterback Brian Mauer is right.
Oh, sure, when he tweeted this the other day, it upset some people.
Some rather disturbed people.
Are there really Tennessee Volunteers fans who think they are part of the team?
Fans don’t watch The Masters and say “we sank the putt” when their favorite pro golfer records a birdie to lead the field.
Tennis fans don’t watch Wimbledon and say “we won the championship” when the their favorite player is presented with the Venus Rosewater Dish.
So why is it any different in team sports?
Granted, when a team takes on the name of a geographic area, be it the city or state, they play in, there’s a feeling of identity given to the fan base.
So for a fan to get caught up in the spirit of the competition and refer to his or her team…
