College Basketball Is Changing Their Rules. Why Can’t Baseball?
Realizing there is more to the sport than 3-point shots, the NCAA has moved back the arc. It’s time to realize there’s more to baseball than home runs and strikeouts, too.
Basketball and baseball seem to have continuing differences on how their sports should be played.
Should they cater to the greatest offensive reward one can have in their sport, or should they promote the many aspects of appeal their sport provides?
Case in point, college basketball moving back the 3-point arc to 22', 1 3/4", back from the 20', 9" it had.
The feeling is the game has completely become one where a team looks for the 3-pointers first instead of trying to move the ball inside to a center. A football team wouldn’t think of being satisfied with a field goal, three points, if there’s still a chance to score a touchdown and get six.
So why would a basketball team resign itself to two points on a possession when three are possible?
The center has been devalued, a position now whose primary purpose is to rebound an errant 3-point attempt. In the Men’s NCAA Tournament Final Virginia won the championship by using a five guard set at times.
