Could the Tri-Cities Thunder Beat a High School Football Team?
Local women are undefeated USWFL “Ironwoman” Champions.
Congratulations to the Tri-Cities Thunder, who defeated the defending champion Hampton Roads Gators on Saturday, 32–6, to win the United States Women’s Football League Ironwoman Division championship.
It was revealed on my radio show on Friday during an interview with the Thunder’s Jennifer Garland Johnson on Friday that Cydney Robertson, who made headlines by starting on the defensive line of Unaka High School last season, was recruited but not on the roster of the Thunder.
This is not an indictment of Robertson. Frankly she is one of the most important football players of the area in recent times, helping keep the program at Unaka alive during a difficult time of unjust probation.
She certainly isn’t required to play in the USWNT. It isn’t like graduating from high school to play college football.
Still, if a player was able to start for Unaka, but, for whatever reason, did not play for the Thunder despite their interest, it leads one to wonder if the Thunder could beat the Rangers.
Johnson sidestepped the question when I asked her if she thought her team could. It isn’t good marketing for her to call out a struggling high school football team, especially when doing so would make the Thunder look arrogant.
