The Buccaneers simply aren’t the team they were two months ago

With the departure of Daivien Williamson to Wake Forest new ETSU head men’s basketball coach Jason Shay should take a page out of John Thompson and Joe Paterno’s book.

Schedule soft.

Shay inherits a team with no starters returning. His leading scorer from last year has been injury prone and averaged 7.5 points a game.

No, the cupboard isn’t bare. But his seven-foot center is a transfer from Casper, not Oklahoma State.

Shay’s hoping for waivers, prospects, a transfer who put up good numbers at Southeast Missouri State and another who primarily sat on the bench of a mediocre Tennessee team last season.

Jalen Johnson started only two games for the Vols last year before becoming a graduate transfer to ETSU

So maybe this isn’t the best year to play two Southeastern Conference teams, participate in a multi-team tournament, and enter in to series with high level mid-majors, as Shay’s predecessor Steve Forbes was scheduling before departing to Wake Forest.

Maybe it’s time to instead see what contracts have been signed, which ones haven’t, and try to…
