Sure, less than 24 hours ago the Bucs were playing for their program’s reputation. Now they may cement it while playing heel.

The team nobody wants to win the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament may be on the verge of doing so again.

It’s not that East Tennessee State is perhaps the dominant program in the SoCon that so many, including their own fans, wish to see them fail.

It’s that their storyline is the worst of any of the four remaining teams left in the tournament.

Take, for comparison’s sake, UNCG.

The Spartans are the regular season champion, and there’s always the feeling in one-bid NCAA Tournament leagues that the regular season is meaningless unless the champ wins the conference tournament.

Since this year the regular season champion isn’t even getting an automatic bid to the National Invitational Tournament, the SoCon representative to the NCAAs must be UNCG for the regular season to have any worth whatsoever.

The Spartans also feature the league’s star attraction in Isaiah Miller, perhaps the Southern Conference’s top NBA prospect since Steph Curry.
