In the NFL, it is commonplace that the injury report is given by the coach prior to every press conference. A college coach does reveal the status of injuries when asked in a press conference. How a law would be broken if the college coach merely said "These are the players who will miss next weeks game" or "Johnson has a quad and James has a high ankle sprain" at the start of the presser someone would have to tell me, especially when it is commonplace at higher levels.
I think I'd rather see a player doing just about anything that is legal rather than going to jail. And I do, on the base of it, agree with you. However, when you are dealing with an offensive lineman, whose preparation is so important to keeping the rest of the team healthy, then it becomes a greater issue. Allowing players to miss practice for class generally isn't done in college football. It's one of the many reasons why calling college football players "student-athletes" is so ridiculous.
