Is ETSU About To Run Away With the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Title?

Four straight victories have put the Bucs in a familiar spot; first place. Will Monday’s game against Wofford separate ETSU from the pack or return them to it?

How can the lowest scoring men’s basketball team in the Southern Conference be in first place?

That oxymoron is the situation East Tennessee State (10–5, 6–1) pleasantly finds themselves in coming off a 112–84 victory on Saturday against, get this, the highest scoring team in the SoCon, The Citadel Bulldogs (9–5, 2–5).

The Buccaneers point total was the most they’ve scored on a SoCon opponent since a January 5, 2017 115–71 victory against The Citadel.

Admittedly, ETSU’s ranking is based on their entire schedule, not just their Southern Conference competition.

Still, it indicates an ability to win a physical game, which Buccaneers head coach Jason Shay feels will likely be what is in store for ETSU when they travel to Wofford (10–5, 7–2) on Monday for a 7 pm tipoff. The host Terriers are two point favorites.

Ledarrius Brewer leads the Bucs with 17 points a game. ETSU’s only defeat in the SoCon came with him out of the lineup.
