It’s Time To Restore the ETSU Mini-Dome’s Name To Memorial Center
Or the John Robert Bell Center. Or Keith “Mister” Jennings Arena.
Sun Trust and BB & T Bank have just merged to become Truist Bank, which is leading some to wonder if that means the Atlanta Braves will change the name of their ballpark from Sun Trust to “Truist Park.”
Under the heading of “not all change is good” list naming rights for stadiums. This is one example, but the fact it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine what venue is where because of the naming rights leads one to wonder where the venue is in the first place.
It’s not that difficult to figure out Yankee Stadium is in New York. It’s much more difficult to associate PNC Park with Pittsburgh, especially when there are two PNC Arenas out there, one in Tampa, the other in Raleigh.
But like Truist Park, there is a local venue carrying a name that is now obsolete.
The Mountain States Health Alliance has been Ballad Health for some time. Yet East Tennessee State University’s Mini-Dome still has the old, antiquated health system’s name from the pre-Wellmont merger up on its side.
