Jason Shay is the new head men’s basketball coach of East Tennessee State.

It’s an obvious hire. One that should have been made the day after predecessor Steve Forbes left for Wake Forest.

After all, as mentioned earlier by this columnist, if not Forbes, why not the top lieutenant? Shay has earned his promotion.

Sniffing around did nothing but make ETSU basketball appear slimy by considering a coach who had been fired for drunken behavior previously against one who, whether he deserved it or not, was once hit with a show cause penalty.

It weakened the program by casting questions about Shay; “What’s wrong with him that they were willing to consider breaking up a good thing?”

But Shay can regain control of his leadership by hiring a quality staff. And if he wants to have instant popularity and keep “he’s not as good as Forbes” critics to a minimum, then he should strongly consider hiring Keith “Mister” Jennings.

Jennings is the only player in ETSU history to play in the NBA
