He’s not a coach without talent. But did the Vols really just hire a new athletic director just so he could bring along his old football coach?

Here’s the dirty little truth revealed by Tennessee’s hire of Josh Heupel as head football coach.

The Volunteers are never going to be an elite football program again.

They are the new Ole Miss, a one-time Southeastern Conference powerhouse their peers have passed by.

Tennessee no longer a destination job like Alabama or Florida. The Vols do not pay the head coach like Texas A & M or even, incredibly, Kentucky. The state of Tennessee does not produce the talent of Georgia or Louisiana, and the success the Vols have had is so far in the past contemporary players were not even alive the last time Tennessee won a SEC championship, let alone a national title.

Incoming freshmen likely have no memories of Tennessee even winning a division title. That’s because they were 4 when it happened.

Their immediate future figures to be as mediocre as their recent past with a skeleton roster ripped apart by transfers and an impending probation that will almost assuredly take scholarships away.
