Something to be Desired at Jason Shay’s Introductory ETSU Press Conference . . . Or Was There?
There’s one thing that came across during Jason Shay’s online introductory press conference.
He’s not as charismatic as Steve Forbes.
Shay came off as almost shy. His sport coat with a plaid design didn’t set on his body just right. He’s now in the league of his former bosses, but he still subserviently called them “Coach Forbes” and “Coach Pearl” rather than “Steve” and “Bruce” as if he was not one of their contemporary peers but still an assistant.
The worst thing for a coach is when he comes across making people say “THIS . . . is our leader?”
There were times Shay came off as that insecure.
Perhaps it was the environment. Unlike Forbes, whose introductory press conference five years ago resembled more a party with cheerleaders, bands, and fans who were so ready for change they applauded him when he said “I don’t even know how to coach zone.”
Anywhere else and that remark would have been viewed as an attack at his predecessor, Murry Bartow, and an admission of limited knowledge of the game.
