The Future of ETSU (and Chattanooga) Basketball Lies With David Sloan
There’s a lot at stake tonight at the Roundhouse
If there is a whipping boy on the 2020–21 East Tennessee State men’s basketball team, it’s likely David Sloan.
Whenever a player transfers from a major conference program to a mid-major one, there’s naturally lots of hope for the transfer in his new abode.
Such was the case with Sloan, who left Kansas State to come to ETSU.
Except Sloan was sluggish. Though he started the first eight games at point guard with his new team this season, he committed too many turnovers, took too many shots, and the Buccaneers struggled with a 4–4 record.
It wasn’t until ETSU head coach Jason Shay experimented with Ledarrius Brewer and to a lesser extent, Serrel Smith Jr. guiding the offense after he suspended Sloan for a game that the Bucs really started to take off, winning six of their first seven games after Sloan was taken out of the starting lineup.
But Sloan is the only true point guard on the team. And this was shown on Saturday when Sloan returned to the starting lineup.
