The USWNT Is Both Good and Bad For Their Sport

Sports changed on Sunday when the United States Women’s National Team won the World Cup.

The USWNT have unquestionably made America the leading soccer country in the world for their gender.

America is now a soccer country, and the sport will likely grow through the women’s game more than the males.

The USWNT bring in more money than their male counterparts. They will likely be paid more money as well.

Homosexuality in women’s athletics is nothing new and to a large part has become accepted. But the USWNT demanded you notice their sexuality. One gets the feeling future gay athletes, both male and female, will now become more accepted should they come out.

The USWNT also made it acceptable for female athletes to be brash and outspoken.

Megan Rapinoe

Megan Rapinoe is the new Charles Barkley. Or, if you prefer soccer writer John Krysinsky’s comparison, Muhammad Ali.

It’s a most apt comparison. Because talking about not going to the “f___ing White House” is as offensive to many as comparing Joe Frazier to a gorilla.

American culture is polarized by politics and that polarization has drifted in to sports.
