What ETSU Kneeling For the Anthem Really Means.
Or, why head men’s basketball coach Jason Shay’s statement on the anthem protest is not to be believed.
East Tennessee State University President Brian Noland and head men’s basketball coach Jason Shay both say their team’s kneeling during the pregame playing of the Star Spangled Banner at Chattanooga on February 15 is not meant to disrespect the American flag or the military.
And they can’t possibly believe what they are saying.
Because if it was, then we’d hear from the players themselves about their actions. If their kneeling was truly, as Shay described on Wednesday, “a call to action against racial inequalities and injustices” then it wouldn’t have taken three instances of it occurring to draw attention.
The players would have demanded attention earlier than when they received it.
Shay stated on Wednesday the decision to kneel for the anthem was made by the team prior to the season.
One problem. The national anthem wasn’t played prior to the games of the Bucs’ season…
