What’s Wrong With the ETSU Bucs

Yes, with a victory Wednesday night the Bucs could be in first place. But something’s missing. Here’s what it is.

Here’s what’s likely to happen when ETSU’s men’s basketball team travels to The Citadel (10–7, 3–7) Wednesday for a 7 pm tipoff.

* It will be a high scoring game with the pace set by Bulldogs head coach Duggar Baucom; up tempo with lots of 3-point shots.

* ETSU (11–7, 7–3) will win. Since Buccaneers head coach Jason Shay came to Johnson City with then-head coach Steve Forbes in 2015, The Citadel has defeated ETSU only once in 11 games.

* And the victory, even by college basketball regular season standards, will be meaningless.

It’s beginning to look like ETSU’s 112–84 January 30th victory against The Citadel, yes VICTORY, could have a similar effect on this year’s Bucs as The Citadel’s one aforementioned victory, 84–82 at Freedom Hall three years ago, did.

ETSU allowed The Citadel to control the tempo in that game and it sent the Bucs in to a three-game losing streak that choked away a regular season conference championship.

The Bulldogs did the same, even in robust defeat, in this season’s first meeting between the two teams.
