Who’s Worse? Jeremy Pruitt or Butch Jones?
Butch Jones may be the least popular man in Tennessee.
From failing to count to 14, keeping Brett Kendrick on the field when he almost assuredly had a concussion, “what do we want from our media” to seeing Jalen Hurd transfer and the messy image associated with Drae Bowles, A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams, Jones tenure as Volunteers head football coach is not remembered fondly even though he produced back-to-back 9–4 seasons and had some notable victories.
But when he started to lose, Jones became an unlikable figure who fit the image of a bully.
Still, after Saturday’s 29–26 double overtime loss against Brigham Young, we must now wonder if current head coach Jeremy Pruitt has surpassed Jones as “Bully Coach.”
Case in point, the reaction of Pruitt following quarterback Jarrett Guarantano’s third quarter interception to Kavika Fonua that began the Cougars comeback.
True, it was an ill-advised pass into coverage that likely was going to trim Tennessee’s lead to just one score.
But the Vols would still have the lead. They’d still have Ty Chandler and emerging freshman Eric Gray in the backfield to protect that lead and possibly add to it.
