Why ETSU Head Football Coach Tre Lamb Chose Jaylen King to Start at Quarterback in 2024.
Because he fits his system and was the quarterback of record last season when he took Lamb’s Garder-Webb Bulldogs to the FCS Playoffs. But there’s something else.
New ETSU head football coach Tre Lamb has seemingly been well received since coming to Johnson City last year.
Fans are happy that George Quarles, who took ETSU football from championship caliber to laughingstock overnight, is gone.
And when a losing coach is replaced by a young, seemingly “going places” coach the vibe will be positive.
But until now, I thought the favoritism he’s shown new starting quarterback Jaylen King spoke more of nepotism than anything else.
True, King started the last seven games for Lamb last season at Gardner-Webb, leading the Bulldogs to a 5–2 record and FCS playoff berth. He possesses the so-called “dual threat” skills Lamb wants in an up-tempo offense and at 6–3 has the height the new coach wants at the position as well.
Still, Lamb was inheriting a pretty good quarterback in Tyler Riddell, who led ETSU to an 11–2 record and school record for passing accuracy before being sabotaged by country bumpkin Quarles.
