Will Phil Fulmer Remain the Teflon Athletic Director?

He’s put his signature on Tennessee athletics. Now it’s time for results.

There are certain figures the media rules untouchable.

Or, if you prefer, they latch their wagon to.

Consider Ben Roethlisberger, who once epitomized the persona of an arrogant athlete. A divided locker room has not been anything new during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Roethlisberger era, but the perception of his latest feud is now “Roethlisberger good, Antonio Brown bad.”

It’s one thing to have a star quarterback’s transgressions forgotten by hometown media, especially when the Diva wide receiver is traded away. It’s another when national media gives the seal of approval to you.

Past arrogance with the media and teammates, let alone off field behavior approaching felonious that resulted in a suspension, have been forgotten.

Consider Aaron Rodgers is now perceived as more of a clubhouse cancer than Roethlisberger in the national media’s eye.

Locally, the figure it seems the local media has attached themselves to is Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer.

It’s understandable. Fulmer is the coach who brought a national championship to Knoxville. He’s an iconic figure at the University of Tennessee.

Furthermore, though Fulmer’s appearance may indicate “Bubba,” he’s got a bit of “Gansta” in him. He became the head football coach and athletic…
